April 2018 Fly Fishing News
Truckee Trout Unlimited Fishmas Eve Fundraiser
4/27/2018 – Truckee Trout Unlimited presents the 13th annual “Fishmas Eve” fundraiser for future projects in the Truckee river basin. There will be lots of great raffle items including guided trips, and more! $30 gets you all the beer and pizza you can handle, plus raffle tickets. This is the premier event for trout bums all over Northern California. 7-9pm Coyote Bar & Grill in Truckee, Ca. Be there!
May 19th, 2018 – Spring is a great time to fish streamers as water temperatures rise, and a technique not a lot of fly anglers employ. In my workshop you’ll learn my simple approach to a fun and active style of fly fishing that gets the attention of large apex predator trout. You’ll learn the six different presentations I use, rigging, fly selection, and trout behavior during the different times of year. Handouts and a Riverside lunch included. The workshop will be held on the Truckee River. Price per angler is $150, 4 students max, 1 spot open at this time. Call Jon to get on the student list, 530.228.0487. Or send him an email HERE.
This summer I’m offering basic “on site” entomology classes that will shorten the learning curve for students, and help them make accurate identifications while on the water. Understanding trout food will bring more success to any angler, and broaden their horizon to the fascinating world under the currents. Our first class is filled, but we have 2 spots open on July 21st. For more information, and book your spot click HERE

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
4/15/2018 – Currently the flows along Glenshire drive are at 2,420 cubes, Boca Bridge is at 3,310, and near the bottom of the canyon, Farad is running at 3,430 cfs. Water temps on Thursday started at 46 degrees and reached 50 by the afternoon. Water clarity was not muddy, and actually had some nice color to it with about 2.5 feet of visibility. Big Truckee trout thrive in these conditions. For the full report click HERE.
Lower Yuba River Update
4/18/2018 – Dropping slowly into shape but still a tad high for the walk and wade angler, you’re better off in a boat. Miracle March comes through again and saves the season, April is still sputtering with moisture with a few more weak systems, though we won’t see any more intensely large systems move through. The Lower Yuba River is currently flowing at 3,500 cubes, and Englebright reservoir is spilling at 101% of capacity. I have not been on the river in over a month and do not know of any hatches that are currently active. For a detailed report on my last trip, check out my latest blog post HERE
