TRUCKEE RIVER & LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER GUIDED FLY FISHING

Truckee River Fly Fishing Guide Trips with Baiocchi’s Troutfitters

About Fly Fishing The Truckee River Area

The Truckee River redefines the definition of a classic Sierra freestone river, it’s big water with plenty of great habitat for wild brown and rainbow trout to thrive. The Truckee river is not easy to decipher, and proper fly fishing techniques, and the right flies are a must. Though challenging, the river makes one a better fly angler which is often revealed when visiting another watersheds, and different rivers throughout the western United States. Baiocchi’s Troutfitters history with the Truckee River is decades long. From Jon’s early days of fly fishing the river in the 70’s, being a resident of the town of Truckee from 1986 to 1991, to my present day Truckee River Fly Fishing Guide Service, I’m always happy to share the knowledge of the river with my guests. In addition, I’m a member of the Tahoe Truckee Fly Fishers and volunteer my time guiding for the Cliff Frazier Memorial Trout Camp for kids during the early summer, giving back and passing on the passion of fly fishing in the Truckee area.

The upper section of the Truckee River offers easy access next to highway 89, and during spring time the river fishes well here. Further downstream and east of the town of Truckee, the river has special regulations, and is nearly a totally wild fishery. The Glenshire section offers anglers with easy access, and with more water in the system from other tributaries like Martis Creek, the river’s size increases. There is numerous riffles, pools, and pocket water to be explored on the Glenshire stretch that hold quality trophy trout.

It’s the lower section of this most impressive watershed with its “Grand Canyon of the Truckee River” that is the heart and soul of this watershed, and where the largest trout await the fly angler who has the perfect drift, and the right fly. Great hatches invade this river, and in the month of June three large aquatic insects can be out; Green Drake mayflies, Golden stoneflies, and Carpenter ants.

Summer evenings offer caddis hatches and a chance of catching these wild and beautiful trout on the surface with dry flies. Water flows drop during the fall season, concentrating the populations of fish to certain sections of the river. The second season commences during this time, and hatches of blue wing olive mayflies and the October caddis thrive, and dry fly opportunities await. Presenting streamers for apex predatory trout is an option, and requires many casts and long hours, but with a little luck you may catch the fish of a lifetime.

Winter time brings cold weather and snow blankets the region, but that does not mean you can’t fly fish the river. A visitor to the Tahoe Truckee area can snowboard or ski in the morning, followed up by a afternoon session on the water. Click HERE to see my winter fishing tips for approaching the Truckee area. The Truckee River is a must experience while fly fishing in the Lake Tahoe – Truckee River area. Though challenging to be successful, your reward will be in the net after perfect presentations, hard work, and perseverance.

The Little Truckee River

Fly fishing the Little Truckee River in the north Lake Tahoe area is a test of skill, brains, and patience. The Little Truckee river is a tailwater that is released below Stampede Reservoir and flows through a lush meadow as it twists and turns through 3.5 miles of fishable water before its inflow at Boca Reservoir. Water temps remain cold even during the summer months enabling rainbow and brown trout, and aquatic insects like pale morning dun and blue wing olive mayflies to thrive. Technical drag free nymphing with small flies down to a size 24 is the most effective way to catch trout on the Little Truckee River. Special regulations adopted in the year 2000 state only barbless artificials are permitted, the maximum take size is 14″ and the limit is two. It’s because of these special regs that the fishery on the Little Truckee river has rebounded so well and has achieved a high status among fly anglers. As of fall 2015, habitat restoration in the form of boulders and logs have been funded for, and placed by local Trout Unlimited chapter #103. This will only improve this great fishery as time goes on. Prolific hatches, technical presentations, and head hunting sums up the Little Truckee. For those looking for the ultimate test of their fly fishing skills, this is it; but you better bring “A” game.
