About Fly Fishing The North Fork Yuba River
The North Yuba River is a fascinating fishery with the most beautiful wild rainbows in Northern California. From the headwaters down to Bullard’s Bar reservoir the river is filled with pocket water, long runs, and deep pools offering over 40 miles of river access along Highway 49. Local flora and fauna mixed with the surrounding canyon offers exceptional views in a gorgeous setting. Fly fishing the North Fork Yuba River is without a doubt some of the most fun you’ll ever have. Fantastic short line dry fly fishing to eager trout makes this river very appealing.
Jon is the most active guide on the North Fork Yuba River and when the summer heat turns on, he knows exactly where the cold springs enter the watershed ensuring good fishing, and comfortable conditions for wet wading. The North Fork Yuba River is ideal for the beginning fly angler, and for the accomplished expert it provides a very exciting fishery. From easy access, to areas that are wild and remote, the North Fork Yuba is a special freestone Northern Sierra river that offers the truest form of classic fly fishing.
About Fly Fishing The Lower Yuba River
The Lower Yuba River is very challenging, moody, and complex. it’s a river that has all the essential qualities that makes it a serious destination for fly fishing. This river is a tail water fishery that provides year round cold water and supports a small yet healthy population of wild Chinook salmon, steelhead and rainbow trout. The winter of 2017 and the high flows that were associated with it has changed the river in many ways. The Yuba is in the rebuilding process, and is quickly gaining strength with every passing month.
Jon shortens the learning curve for his guests on the Lower Yuba River, and explains the techniques needed through seasons of the river with the right approach. More than a typical guide trip, you’ll learn everything you wanted to know about this special fishery, while gaining the knowledge to be more successful on your own. Rod set up, rigging, the go to flies, and local inside knowledge is included. You’ll learn all the techniques required for the Yuba including technical dry fly fishing, swinging, and nymphing.
Using pontoon boats is a very productive way to fish the Lower Yuba River. We use these boats as a taxi to drift from one area to another, covering more effective water gives the fly angler a higher rate of success. Jon offers Pontoon Workshops for up to two guests, and group trips such as fly clubs. For large groups, Jon works with Lance Gray of Lance Gray & Co. The workshops provide the perfect opportunity to learn about setting up your craft correctly, on the water safety, proper oar strokes, ferrying from one side of the river to the other, and picking the right line down the river to avoid hazardous situations. The freedom of the drift opens up a whole new world for the bank angler on the Lower Yuba River, and offers a relaxing way to enjoy the river.
Aquatic insects flourish on the Lower Yuba River with prolific hatches of pale morning duns, march browns, pink alberts, caddis flies, and the skwala stonefly just to name a few. The Lower Yuba offers anglers many different fishing opportunities to choose from, but the highlight is the winter dry fly fishing where hunting heads and precision presentations reward the angler. Hatches can happen at any time on the river, many times there will be more than one species emerging and it is extremely hard to decipher for the average fly angler. Jon’s experience shines most in these complex situations, and he is more than happy to instruct others how to address the solutions to catching trout during a masking hatch.
Jon is one of the few successful walk and wade guides who emphasis is on teaching his guests the moods of the Lower Yuba River, and sharing the secrets of all the techniques that can make any angler more successful. A day on the Yuba is considered to be the most comprehensive classroom you’ll ever love.

“My wife was celebrating her birthday and she has not stopped talking about our flyfishing trip we had with Jon on the North Fork of the Yuba River. If she has told me once, she’s told me a dozen times that being on the river with her family and Jon was the best birthday ever! Jon is an awesome guide and a great spirit”

“Jon, just wanted to tell you that Joe and I really enjoyed your guiding yesterday on the north fork of the Yuba River. As I told him, the best guides put you on the fish, and the rest is pretty much up to the client. But you did far more than that, and Joe appreciated the casting tips. He has not gone out that much, but I have been trying to help wean him off the spinning rod. He is getting there thanks to you.”
-Sincerely, Greg Jacobs
“Thanks so much for showing us a great time on the North Fork. When I asked my kids what they enjoyed most about our vacation, they did not hesitate-it was the fly fishing with Jon; the best guide in the state of California!
